Poland syndrome is a rare congenital disorder mainly manifested by hypoplasia or absence of the bony structures and soft tissues of the chest wall, as well as ipsilateral upper limb deformities such as syndactyly, brachydactyly and aplastic phalanges. When a family receives this diagnosis, a common and stressful question arises: Does Poland syndrome affect the brain or cognitive development?
Understanding the Clinical Features and Causes
Current medical research indicates that Poland syndrome is a physical deformity and does not typically affect the brain or intellectual capabilities. The condition primarily affects the chest wall—particularly the pectoralis major muscle and ribs—resulting in varying degrees of chest asymmetry or concavity. Upper limb abnormalities on the same side, including underdeveloped muscles, shortened or fused fingers, and limited range of motion, are seen in some patients. Severe chest wall deformities can occasionally lead to mild respiratory difficulties, reduced exercise tolerance, or spinal dysplasia such as scoliosis. Additionally, visible asymmetry may cause psychosocial distress, particularly in adolescent and adult patients.
While the exact causes of Poland syndrome are not fully understood, multiple hypotheses have been proposed, including embryonic developmental anomalies, abnormal blood supply and genetic factors. To date, no definite cause has been confirmed.
